An ELD isn't guessing where you are or how long you've driven โ it's reading your engine directly. Here's what it connects to and what it actually records.
The core idea behind the ELD mandate is that your logs come from the truck itself, not from a driver typing them in. FMCSA requires every ELD to be integrally synchronized with the engine so it captures data automatically. That's the whole point โ an ELD is harder to falsify than a paper logbook because the engine is the source of truth.
On most heavy-duty trucks the ELD connects through the diagnostic port using one of a few standard cables:
The engine's control module already broadcasts data across this connection. The ELD simply listens to the signals that are relevant to your logs.
FMCSA's technical specification says an ELD must obtain these values from the engine control module (ECM):

From those raw signals the ELD builds the record: date, time, location, odometer and engine hours attached to each change of duty status.
You don't have to tell the ELD you've started driving. Once the vehicle is moving at about 5 mph or more, the ELD automatically sets your status to driving. When you've been stopped for five consecutive minutes, it prompts you to confirm your status โ and if you don't respond within about a minute, it defaults to on-duty not driving. That's why occasional unidentified driving events show up: the truck moved while no driver was logged in.

Most heavy trucks connect through the diagnostic port using a 9-pin (J1939) or older 6-pin (J1708) cable. Lighter vehicles may use the OBD-II port. The ELD reads data the engine already broadcasts.
